Ethiopia’s Financial Center under construction

Ethiopian financial institutions has been building their Head Quarters in the last few years. Almost all financial institutions, including banks and insurance companies are building their head quarters in Ethiopia’s financial street that is around National Theater, specifically on the way from Commercial Bank of Ethiopia HQ towards Mexico street and Addis Ababa Stadium.

Regardless of political instability and inflation in the country, Ethiopia has been undergoing massive construction projects for the last 5 years, specially in banking sector. Here are some of the biggest and tallest buildings that are currently under-construction and also completed.

Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, CBE

Contractor: China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC)

Height: 198-meter (expected to be the tallest structure in East Africa)

Storey: 46-storey building

Budget: US$266.5m

To be completed: 2020


current status – January 2018

The state owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) signed an agreement with the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) for the plan to build a 198-meter building for CBE’s headquarters in Ethiopia, which will be the tallest structure in East Africa back in 2015.

The project will be completed in 2020.

United Bank

Contractor: Chinese Xiang Su International

Storey: 32-storey

Area: 3,338 square meter

To be Completed: 2020


Current status (as of January 2018)

Ethiopia’s private United Bank also known as Hibret Bank signed a construction agreement with xiang su International for its State of the Art 32 storey future Headquarters, In 2015.

The building is under timely construction process,and is planned to be completed in 2020, according to its contract agreement.


Zemen Bank

Contractor: Anchor Foundation and Bamacon Engineering

Budget: 1 Billion Birr

Storey: G + 30 high

Premium Ethiopian bank Zemen Bank hired Bamacon Engineering construction company to its headquarters at the heart of Ethiopia’s financial district by August 19, 2016. Currently, the construction of the headquarter is going as planned and will be competed by 2020.
