The new Ethiopia –Djibouti Railway is a standard gauge international railway that connects Addis Ababa to Djibouti. As more than 90% of Ethiopia’s import-export trade passes through Djibouti, the railway is expected to transport millions tonnes every year.
But the problem is the railway has not started operation yet due to unknown reasons. The railway was officially opened by 2016, and was planned to fully become operational within 2017. But only few days remained to end 2017, and the railway has not yet begin operation.
The Ethiopian Railway Authority is now announcing that passenger operations would start in January 2018. Most of the reasons for not to launch the operation are now solved, according to officials.
