Ethiopia’s Federal Supreme Court Reduces Sentence of Yonathan Tesfaye by 3 years

Ethiopia’s Federal Supreme Court has reduced the jail sentence of Yonathan Tesfaye Regassa, former public relations of the opposition Semayawi Party, by three years. The Supreme Court has overruled a decision by the Federal High court fourth criminal bench that sentenced Yonathan to six years and six months jail on 25th May 2017.

Yonathan’s lawyer Shibiru Belete has appealed for the charges of terrorism to be downgraded to criminal charges, Addis Standard, local magazine in Ethiopia, reported today. Accordingly, the Supreme Court has decided that the terrorism charges against Yonatan’s will be downgraded to criminal charges under article 257/A of the 2004 criminal code.
