Tigray regional government has banned peaceful demonstration plans for 04 November 2017 that was asked by Arena Party. Arena party has submitted a request letter to Mekelle city administration about the protest plans. According to the party’s public relation head Amdom Gebreslasie the purpose of the demonstration is to condemn ethnic-related violences in the country including the recent killings of innocent people in Naqamtee.
Today, 02 November 2017, Mekelle city administration has wrote a reply Arena that rejects Arena’s request for collaboration in its planned peaceful demonstration. “Due to public activities and timely conferences scheduled in advance, we can’t provide the required collaborations” the letter from the city administration said.
However, Arena Tigray’s Public relations Head, Amdom Gebreslasie said that his party hasn’t received any letter yet from the city administration.
This is not the first time the city administration rejected a request for demonstration by the opposition. The regional government has repeatedly rejected letters of requests for demonstrations from Arena Party citing security concerns.
