The renowned Ethiopian distance running coach, Dr Woldemeskel Kostre, passed away on Sunday in Addis Ababa.
Dr Woldemeskel was considered by many to be the architect of Ethiopia’s phenomenal success at longer distances from the mid-1980s onwards.
Dr Woldemeskel is well known for his great ability in spotting and nurturing young talents.
He has been instrumental in developing the career of so many of Ethiopia’s greatest athletes.
Runners Dr Woldemeskel coached included Olympic champions Haile Gebreelassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba and Derartu Tulu.
Dr Woldemeskel was also active in the introduction and implementation of athletic youth projects in all parts of the country.
His coaching ability is recognized around the world as he was named Coach of the Year by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 2006.
The government has awarded him prizes several times for the successes his athletes achieved in international competitions.
Dr Woldemeskel was appointed as an assistant coach of the Ethiopian athletics team at the 1972 Olympic Games and for more than 30 years after Munich he was a familiar face among the Ethiopian delegation at major championships.
